A man who fatally shot his
15-year-old son after the boy admitted molesting a 3-year-old girl has
been convicted of second-degree murder.
A Wayne County Circuit
Court jury returned its verdict Thursday against Jamar Pinkney Sr. of
Highland Park, a 37-year-old postal worker charged in the Nov. 16 death
of Jamar Pinkney Jr.
The elder Pinkney also was convicted of
assaulting the boy’s mother, the boy’s aunt and a family friend.
The
jury could have considered first-degree murder or manslaughter in its
deliberations. The second-degree murder verdict means Pinkney will be
eligible for parole.
Defense attorney Corbett Edge O’Meara says
Pinkney never expected to be exonerated, but the second-degree verdict
is preferable to a first-degree conviction not allowing for parole.
Sentencing
is scheduled for April 15.
